When Will We See Casas in '23?
The new Collective Bargaining Agreement hasn’t been published yet, at least not for public consumption, but piecing together news stories from March, I believe this chart I made explains the possible promotion outcomes for Triston Casas next season.
The numbers are years of service time accrued. These presume that once he is called up from Triple-A, he is up for good. Also, that April 20th-ish date would be pushed back a bit if he’s called up between now and the end of this season and gets a little head start on some days of MLB service time.
If I were to guess right now, I’d say that Eric Hosmer opens next year as the Red Sox first baseman, with Casas in Worcester. At the first sign of a Casas hot streak, he would be promoted and become the Red Sox everyday first baseman for years to come. If Hosmer is somehow mashing next April, and the timeline gets delayed a bit, no one should be complaining because things will be going well for the Sox.
It’s possible that I’m undervaluing the chance of getting that draft pick, but given the standard operating procedure of little to no real information flowing out of the front office, I’m guessing we’ll have no idea of their thinking until next March when the opening day roster is announced.
